Frequently asked questions

How do you add business days to a date?
Pick a start date and the number of business days to add. The calculator walks forward one calendar day at a time, counting only business days and skipping weekends and holidays. The start date itself is not counted — so adding 1 business day to a Friday lands on the following Monday.
What counts as a business day?
By default, Monday through Friday. You can switch the weekend to Friday–Saturday (common in the Middle East), Sunday only, no weekend at all, or choose any combination of days with the custom day checkboxes.
What happens if my start date falls on a weekend or holiday?
Nothing special breaks — the start date is never counted as one of the N days. Counting begins on the next calendar day, so a Saturday start with N=1 still lands on Monday when the weekend is Saturday–Sunday.
Which holidays are skipped?
Optionally, the US federal holiday preset: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas — with the standard observed-day rule (a holiday on Saturday is observed the Friday before, on Sunday the Monday after). You can also add your own holidays manually. The list is built into the page, not fetched from a calendar API, so double-check critical deadlines against an official source.
How is adding business days different from adding calendar days?
Calendar days count every day including weekends; business days skip non-working days. Example: 5 business days after Friday, October 9, 2026 is Friday, October 16, 2026 — while 5 calendar days after the same date is Wednesday, October 14, 2026.
Can I use a Friday–Saturday weekend like in the Middle East?
Yes. Choose the “Fri–Sat (Middle East)” weekend preset, or tick exactly the days you want as weekend days with the custom checkboxes. The skipped-date audit trail lists every date that was skipped and why.
What is the Excel formula for adding business days?
Use =WORKDAY(start_date, days, holidays) for a Saturday–Sunday weekend, or =WORKDAY.INTL(start_date, days, weekend_code, holidays) for custom weekends — for example the code “0000110” (Monday-to-Sunday order) means a Friday–Saturday weekend. This page generates the exact formula for your settings; click “Copy Excel formula” to use it.
Does the result account for holidays automatically?
Only if you enable the US federal holiday preset or add holidays manually — the calculator has no live connection to any calendar service. For payroll or contract deadlines, always verify against your company's official holiday calendar.
